Turning the Tables: How to Evaluate an Executive Search Firm
For the past 40 years, organizations have relied on executive search firms to deliver leaders that meet strategic objectives and drive shareholder value. To produce the right outcome, the search team needs a deep understanding of—and insight into—a client organization’s challenges, objectives, strategy and culture. Equally important is the ability to approach the best candidates.
The unfortunate reality for many client organizations today is that they receive from an executive search firm neither the insights, nor the candidate access required to assemble the right executive leadership team. Many search firms have adopted a transactional approach to search work that is counter to the type of rapport and sense of partnership required to grasp clients’ underlying needs. Moreover, countless off-limits restrictions from a vast client base dramatically shrink the pool of candidates that the largest firms can tap, often keeping the best talent out of reach—an ironic downside to the extensive resources super-sized firms tout as a selling point.
